HOMELESSNESS CAN HAPPEN TO ANYONE
Please know that homelessness is not always the result of irresponsible actions. An illness, an accident, loss of roommate, loss of employment, landlord refusing to make repairs, the sale of your sole residence by your landlord, fleeing domestic violence, victim of housing discrimination, losses through a natural disaster, a divorce, the death of the sole wage earner, and landlord refusing to renew your lease - are just some of the factors which could unfortunately lead to losing housing, suffering an eviction, and becoming homeless.
CHALLENGES FACED WHEN HOMELESS
There is a sad reality with being homeless: Often, there are no beds available at local homeless shelters. There are localities and counties that do not even have one (1) government funded shelter. Homeless persons with no income have an especially difficult time getting into shelter. Most non-government funded emergency shelters charge a maintenance fee or participant fee. The other challenge with getting to emergency shelters is the lack of public transportation and connecting bus transportation. The lack of sufficient Continuum of Care (CoC) homeless support services to cover each county - leaves homeless individuals with no resource to shelter and no resource for Rapid Rehousing. Churches and nonprofits try their best to provide relief through food distribution, clothing closets, assistance with hotel/motel stays, shower stations, help replacing lost vital documents, and obtaining a State ID. Without government support, charity funds remain low and the goals of life-impacting outreach to the homeless falls short of meeting the needs of the homeless population. Homeless parents of minor children, homeless Seniors, homeless Persons with Disabilities and persons suffering with a chronic illness - are especially vulnerable and suffer the greatest. Homeless youth tend to be at risk of sexual assaults, rape, human trafficking, and even death. Housing is a foundational necessity for existence, for living, for building, and for thriving. Housing is essential to life.
BEING SICK OR LIVING WITH A DISABILITY WHILE HOMELESS
There are homeless individuals diagnosed with COVID-19 and suffering from its brutal and merciless battery of symptoms - while having nowhere to self-care and nowhere to quarantine. Some homeless individuals are diagnosed with diabetes and have nowhere to refrigerate their insulin. There are homeless school children having only their parents’ car to call home. Spending very cold winter months and 90+ degree summer months in a car can even lead to death! It absolutely breaks my heart when I get a call from a single Mother who has been evicted and she says: I have nowhere to go. I, Sister Dina, Founder of Tell The World Ministries (TTWM) Inc, have personally experienced homelessness as a teenager and in my adult life. I compare homelessness and the threat of becoming homeless with the type of fear that: death, divorce, and cancer can bring upon a soul.
